Various groups throughout Huntington, including all of the neighborhood associations, are actively working on a series of Safer Neighborhood Meetings culminating in a Safer Neighborhood Summit on May 25th. Each meeting is designed to get citizen feedback on ways we think we can actually actively make our neighborhoods better places to live and to develop specific plans to help make our goals a reality. If you think your neighborhood could be safer, in any way, then it behooves you to attend a meeting (or more)!

Here are the currently scheduled meetings:

Spring Hill : April 14th 6pm @ Cabell Huntington Hospital

Southside : April 20th 6:30pm @ Southside Elementary

Highlawn : May 4th 7:30pm @ Highlawn United Methodist Church

Walnut Hills: May 11th 6:30pm @ Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge

West Huntington: May 14th 7pm @ Central United Methodist Church

Westmoreland: May 17th 6:30pm @ Westmoreland Women’s Club

To help foster discussion I strongly encourage you to download and read the Safer Neighborhood Discussion Guide which will be used during the meetings to help guide and foster the discussion. If you want you can also print out this Flyer for the Action Summit and use it to advertise the meetings and the final summit throughout your neighborhood.

Over the past weekend there was extensive spray paint vandalism done to the new playground at McClellan Park (27th street). The vandalism was reported to the city’s park board Monday morning and by Monday afternoon it had been removed. A big cheer to the park board for being so dilligent! Remember, if you see vandalism, or vandals, to report them to the proper authorities to get it cleaned up and to put and end to this self destructive behavior!

You can see the vandalism that was done at this flickr photo set

On Saturday, April 4th the good people of Guyandotte, WV will be having a “Shine Time” event aimed at helping to clean up the city and to dispose of excess trash and old tires. The event starts at 9am and runs through 1pm – though last year it kept on going until nearly 6pm because demand was so high. There will be a truck there to take away old tires and at least one large dumpster for collecting waste. At the same time a group of citizens will be walking the streets of historic Guyandotte to pick up trash and clean the streets.

Please feel free to stop by and help or to take advantage of this great service (it’s free!)

Mayor Wolfe has announced a citywide cleanup project dating between April 25 and May 5. He said more details will be forthcoming.

Huntington is a great city but far too many people feel comfortable throwing trash on the ground, a citywide cleanup can only bring about a positive change. Heck, why wait for the project to begin – if you see a piece of trash on the ground pick it up and put it in a trash can. You can even do this while downtown as the main streets (3rd, 4th, and 5th) all have plenty of permanent receptacles.

I’ll update this post as I learn more about the cleanup project.

If you live in, or care about, the Highlawn Neighborhood I encourage you to swing by the Neighborhood Association meeting tonight at the United Methodist Church (near the corner of 3rd Ave and 28th St I think). The meeting starts at 7:00pm and is usually an informal but informative affair.

Tonights meeting is an important one as the city will be making a presentation concerning our sewer systems (which you probably know aren’t in great shape) they will also discuss the storm water runoff problems, including basement backup issues.

You can learn more about the association at their website: www.highlawnneighbors.org

The Fairfield West neighborhood of Huntington is about to embark on a new revitalization effort called the Weed and Seed program. It is designed to “weed out” the bad elements in the neighborhood including criminal activity and to “seed” neighborhood revitilization programs. The program is partially funded by a $1 million federal grant to help pay for increased law enforcment activity in the area.

The police have already begun by setting up a new field office which will also house the K-9 unit and serve as the hub for both the bicycle unit and the special operations squad. The increased police presence in the neighborhood should help decrease crime in the neighborhood which currently accounts for 50% of all crime in the city.

You can find out more about this fantastic program in this Herald-Dispatch article: Project Ready to Take Root.
